Aury Island is a children's playground and fishing area. It is named after Louis Aury the Mexican pirate who used Amelia Island as a base of operation during the early 1800s. It was Aury who caused the United States to take possession of the island "in trust" for Spain. This curbed smuggling and maintained effective control of the island until East Florida was ceded to the United States on July 10, 1821. Aury Island was in the original plan for Amelia Island Plantation and remains popular
as a special island getaway within Amelia Island Plantation.
