Course Conditions
Amelia Island Plantation has raised its expectations for the appearance and playability on all four golf courses. Much attention has been placed on the turfgrass maintenance with water management being the primary focus to "firm" up the fairways and greens. Below are some specifics in regard to course conditions.
Playing conditions at the Tom Fazio designed Long Point golf course are excellent. The putting quality on the ‘TifEagle’ greens is superb. Greens, approaches, tees and fairways were overseeded the week of October 8th. Typically playing conditions are slower for two to three weeks after overseeding due to the watering requirements necessary to get the cool-season overseeded turfgrass established. Once the overseed is established, the golf course takes on the lush green appearance from the overseeded turf. Play continues on overseeded conditions until late May, 2008 when efforts will be implemented to hasten the transition from overseeded turf back to Bermuda grass.
The appearance of the classic Pete Dye and Bobby Weed designed 36-hole Amelia Links will be different than in the years past due to a change in overseeding plans. Only the greens and teeing areas were overseeded at the Oak Marsh and Ocean Links golf courses that comprise Amelia Links. Later in the fall, the fairways and roughs will have a "dormant" appearance, but the playing conditions will be firm and fast. By not overseeding the fairways and roughs, the Bermuda grass will get a "jump start" in the spring and provide excellent spring and summer playing conditions. The overseeded greens and tees will be transitioned from cool-season overseeded turf back to Bermuda grass in May. Summer playing conditions will be excellent at Amelia Links.
The playing conditions at the Tom Jackson designed Amelia River (formerly Royal Amelia) golf course are excellent. The 'TifEagle' Bermuda grass greens are superb. The golf course was overseeded the week of October 29th. Playing conditions are slower for about two weeks due to the increased watering necessary for overseed establishment. Play will continue on the overseeded cool-season turf until May, 2008. During that time, transition back to Bermuda grass will be encouraged to promote Bermuda grass growth. Summer playing conditions will be excellent.
