Scalloped Hammerhead
(Sphyrna lewini)
The distinctive "hammer" shaped head of this shark makes identification easy. These sharks range from N.J. to Brazil and are very common in Florida waters. Young are found near shore, especially in the spring. Large individuals can be up to 16 feet long and weigh over 1000 pounds. Hammerheads are usually found near the surface of the water and sometimes form large schools. They feed on smaller fish and squid.
