Internship Information

Environmental Interpretation

Reporting Relationship

Environmental Interpretation Intern reports directly to the Nature Program Manager and indirectly to the Director of Recreation.

Hours

Interns will be scheduled 40 - 50 hours per week with one or two days off. Some exceptions will apply.

Overview

The intern is responsible for assisting the Nature Program Manager and staff in providing guests, club members, property owners, employees, and the general public with programs to better their understanding of the natural environment. They provide consultation for departments in which nature directly affects the work environment such as Golf Course Maintenance, Recreation, etc. The Naturalist staff offers a variety of scheduled and private tours as well as programs within the Kids’ Camp and works closely with local animal sanctuaries in animal rescues on property. Interns will also be responsible for the daily care and maintenance of the animals in the Nature Center. The intern will receive an opportunity to experience procedures in various areas within the Recreation department. Emphasis will vary depending on business demands.

Required Skills/Certificates Including Physical Requirements

Must have:

• Exceptional customer service skills and have an interest in educating others about nature
• Advanced verbal, and written communication skills and be fluent in conversational English (speaking, reading, writing and understanding)
• Knowledge of the terminology, principles and analytical techniques of the physical or natural sciences and data collection and analysis procedures
• A valid driver¹s license, maintain acceptable driver status and be able to obtain a Commercial Drivers License (See "Driving Eligibility")
• Clear or corrected vision € Bike riding skills

Must be:

• Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel
• CPR, First Aid and AED Certification
• Able to exert between 30 - 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or 20 - 30 pounds frequently and/or 10 - 20 pounds constantly to move objects • Able to walk, bend, stoop, stand, and extend arms, hands, and legs and have a good sense of balance, and be able to climb ladders and stairs
• Able to hear and smell

• Ability to identify local flora and fauna of a coastal marine environment

Environmental Interpretation Intern Activities

1.Conduct tours on foot, by kayak, golf cart ("Island Hopper'), bike, Segway® or van.
2.Develop and implement educational programs for Kids Camp Amelia, teens, family/group tours, and the surrounding community.
3.Assist with activities associated with the sea turtle program.
4.Assist with research projects as assigned by supervisor.
5.Assist in the development of brochures and pamphlets for promoting the natural environment at Amelia Island Plantation and Amelia Island.
6.Assist in updating monthly events calendar and other promotional materials.
7.Complete a daily log of activities and tours to include demographics of participants.
8.Complete weekly journal.
9.Contribute to long range plans and track personal progress.
10.Maintain and utilize a time management system.
11.Maintain and care for Nature Center displays.
12.Handle Nature Center animals and perform animal rescues.
13.Order in-house supplies.
14.Attend Customer Service class.
15.Operate standard office equipment.
16.Complete a major project as assigned.
17.Attend staff "Home Team" meetings.
18.Perform other duties as assigned.


Individual will be exposed to all weather and environmental conditions, plant material, bug spray, dust, pollen, and insects. Flexibility is essential. Must adapt to constant change in plans, schedules, and dead lines due to business conditions.
